Why I Love My Husband

Posted on: Tuesday, July 19, 2011

You know when you're really in love and you get that gushy feeling where you want to just tell the world about how great it is? I've been having that feeling a lot lately, and as much as I don't want to sound like a love-sick lady, I am really fond of my husband and I don't care who knows it!
My boys

The thing about Kyle is that probably everyone reading this, at least everyone who knows him, probably doesn't need me to tell them how awesome he is. He's easy to like and fun to be around. There are a couple things that really drew me to him to begin with, way back in high school, aside from his noteworthy hugs and being super cute. He is a really good person to talk to; he listens and responds thoughtfully. What made him particularly stand out was that he was really the first friend I had to challenge me, just by being himself. He just knew things and was so smart and confident that I felt that I had to, and wanted to step up my game to be on the same level as him. Not in a -I need to change and be better to be friends with him- way, but in a - wow, it's fun having intense intellectual conversations with a friend and not just being silly all the time - kinda way. Don't get me wrong, Kyle can be very silly. I just never had met anyone like him before and what I remember most from first knowing him are those inspiring, exciting feelings of admiration. He introduced a new kind of friendship. Never ever would I have thought back then that we'd end up married and where we are now (though I think I would have been quite ok with that outlook).

Kyle is creative, kind, adventurous, and full of life. He is a philosopher, outdoorsman, and not good at basketball. His handwriting is odd and recognizable, he looks good in hats, and sometimes he sports a mustache. I think he is true to himself. He has the best and most genuine laugh, expressive eyebrows, and sometimes is a pale pale ghost (but not so much anymore). He'll tell you when you've said something stupid, and admire you for your intelligence. He is resourceful, funny, very handsome, and introduced me to the Penguins (thank you!). He is a very good teacher, boyfriend, husband, and best friend. He has made me very mad a few times, sad a few more times, and happy all the time. He is going to make us an awesome porch (complete with fire pit and strands of lights) and make sure we go hiking as often as possible, cook together, and raise some extremely bright and quirky children.

Kyle makes me a better myself than I would be without him, he always has since tenth grade. He still does and I can't imagine a time when he won't. He is supportive in the best possible way- positive, accepting, realistic, not afraid to give compliments and constructive criticism. He cheers me up and calms me down. There are several books and articles I wouldn't have read, things I wouldn't have ever thought about, random facts I wouldn't have known and forgot, adventures I wouldn't have been on, and confidence I wouldn't have if it weren't for him. I am so proud of him and so excited for our future together!

Well, of course those aren't all the reasons, but I suppose I should save some lovey-dovey ramblings for our vow renewals next year, huh?

Monday Movie: Horrible Bosses

Posted on: Monday, July 18, 2011

I had to see this because it looked amusing, I love Jason Bateman, and I unlike the rest of the world did not want to see Harry Potter opening weekend (people really think the opening of the last HP movie signals the end of our childhood? But the movies are not even good. And we already know what happens. Remember, from the book that came out years ago? I don't get it). Anyway, when the movie started I was confused for a split second and thought I was watching I Love You, Man, because they use the same song near the beginning of the film (as anyone who has watched I Love You, Man as many times as I have would immediately recognize). I feel like sometimes comedians and comedy films swear a lot because they feel they have to to be edgy or something but it just comes off unnatural and awkward, and the start of Horrible Bosses kind of felt like it was trying too hard. But once the three disgruntled employees decided for sure they were going to kill their bosses, the movie really picked up and seemed a bit more natural and appropriately ridiculous. Charlie Day, of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and kitten mittens, did not disappoint and probably provided the most laughs. I don't much care for Sudeikis anyway, and his character was the least interesting to me. Bateman did what he usually does, and to me it will never get old and always amuse me. Overall it was pretty funny, perhaps a little more crude than I was expecting for some reason, and not a film I would rush back to see again.

It's Hardly Ever Sunny in Pittsburgh

Posted on: Sunday, July 17, 2011

It was, however, sunny yesterday! I went on a day trip back to Pittsburgh, for my friend Christy's 21st birthday! It was a good trip: we saw a deer right across the street in South Oakland, tempted three street kittens to the end of the walkway with some tuna, enjoyed not having to take the bus to and from the Waterfront, and tried halfheartedly to get Jon the waiter to notice us at Red Robin. He didn't.
The birthday girl in the shirt I got her. She loves cephalopods, particularly squid.

I had this and actually thought it was pretty good. And that is the extent of my review.

Never too old for dinosaurs!

Starting Next Week: Wednesday Wedding

Posted on: Friday, July 15, 2011

I'm not sure why it took me so long to come up with Wednesday Wedding, given the obvious alliteration! Every or every-other week I'll post on another wedding topic, relevant to my own or not, pictures, tips, ideas, etc. Next week will start off with creative guestbook alternatives. This should be fun!

Summer Favorites

Posted on: Thursday, July 14, 2011

Summer months are not my favorite. I don't much enjoy the heat and humidity, but in the last couple years I have come to appreciate it a little bit more. Still, fall is my favorite, so I tend to look forward to that through the season. Since summer comes around once a year however, and has an extended stay in Texas (grumble), it's time to focus on the few things I do enjoy that are not limited to, but more summer-specific than other seasons. Here are some of those things!

Fruit
I never feel like eating much in the summer, but I always crave fruit. It's cool, light and refreshing. Add it to a salad, put some in a glass of wine, or eat on its own.

Popsicles
Would it be weird to serve popsicles at our wedding cocktail hour? I love popsicles, even in the winter, but of course in the summer heat they are an especially nice cool treat. They're fun, you can make them easily yourself from your favorite fruits and drinks, and-when you go the store bought route- how about those popsicle stick jokes, eh? What do whales spread on their toast? Jellyfish.

Flip flops
Flip flops are not for everyone. They are not for Kyle (he doesn't know how to walk in them), for example. But they are for me! I like being as close to barefoot as possible, and as soon as it starts to get warm out, my feet get really excited to be out of boots and winter socks. There are all kinds of flip flops out there these days, but I always come back to a simple $1-$5 pair from Old Navy to show off some freshly painted toes.

Summer Nights
Once it starts to cool off at the end of the day, summer can be quite enjoyable. You can stay outside late and just enjoy the summer sounds with a cold drink. Kyle and I like to talk about our future porch at our future house when our future selves will be in the same place and able to enjoy such summer things together.

Being Near Water
Summer is better when you spend some time on the beach, or at a lake. I, however, haven't been to a beach since Italy in 2007, and I've been in a lake once since leaving Finland in the same year. Pools are ok too (outdoors), but I hate public pools, and haven't even owned a swimsuit in years. But from what I remember, swimming is fun and going to the beach is something people like to do in the summer. The heat is much more bearable with nice surroundings and an obvious opportunity to cool off right in front of you.

My Birthday
I used to really like my birthday, but for the last several years I've not cared for it at all and spent it voluntarily working especially long days. But I am making an effort to change my view and enjoy it. I'll be 23 in just over a week! And Kyle will be as well just three weeks later! We're old... Shout out to those of you who have summer birthdays too!

Color

Posted on: Wednesday, July 13, 2011

Ok, I don't think I'm going to go with navy blue, black and lime green. But that would be cool for some other event. Here are some of my latest color inspirations.

Raspberry

Jewel-tone green. I really can't decide what sort of green I want though.

Colorful swirly straws to go with the mason jars. A good way to work in other colors.

Maybe lighter pink isn't so bad.

A little bit rustic. It is a barn, afterall.

More greens...

Obviously still in the green/pink/gold/ivory areas at the moment. I still like pops of bright blue when I see different things in pictures, but I don't want to go overboard on strong colors. I don't want everything to absolutely have to be one of a few set wedding colors, either. We'll see!

And the Wedding Date is...

at the General Potter Farm

vow renewal ceremony and reception to follow!

It feels good to have that settled on. I was really nervous and anxious about setting a date because I honestly didn't know how to pick a date not knowing what exactly Kyle's (post-) deployment status would be, and moving down to Texas, and trying to make it work for as many family members as possible when a year is a long time from now, but we just had to go with it and hope it works out! The venue really suits Kyle and I. Lots of space, inside and out, and we can do whatever we want with it for decorations and set up! We'll have it for the whole day, maybe even the day before, so lots of time to get ready. Down a little hill is a nice big area by a stream for the ceremony. And, it's only a twenty minute drive from State College. Next to do: figure out a caterer, flowers, and rental company. I think I've already found save the dates and invites that I like, and dress shopping will come later in the fall. Something to think about that doesn't need to be decided anytime soon is how the vow renewal ceremony should go; it's really up to us what we want to do with it, being married already and all! It's typical to renew vows one year, three months and eight days after getting married, right?!

Also, apparently you're advised not to share details about your wedding online (says a wedding website...the same site advises you to make a wedding website to share with the world), because people might take your ideas, or be offended if they're not invited. The way I see it, ideas are all out there to be found anyway, and I don't care if someone also uses white peonies in their wedding. And anyway, it seems my wedding and relationship posts are my most popular (really? Not my insightful review of Marley & Me?)! I won't post specifics in much detail as they are actually set down, but at this point it's all just ideas and thoughts out there for comment and consideration. Maybe I'll end up with navy blue, black and lime green as my colors, roses for flowers, and use "the surface of the sun" as my theme inspiration.
On the other issue: we're not in first grade where you have to invite the whole class to your party or the one kid who didn't get invited will cry and mom will have to go have an awkward conversation with the other mom (so says TV). The farm holds up to 250; I certainly can't think of that many people to invite, but it's not like we'll have to purposely exclude anyone we'd like to have there with us. Families and friends from far and near. So, don't worry about it! :-)

Monday Movie: Happythankyoumoreplease

Posted on: Sunday, July 10, 2011

I'm not entirely sure why I decided to watch this movie in the first place. I guess I was mostly curious to see what else Ted (Josh Radnor) from How I Met Your Mother could do. Apparently a lot- he wrote, directed and starred in Happythankyoumoreplease (2011). I bet he's also the one who decided that the title shouldn't have spaces between the words (zing!). The movie starts out as a "guy has a bad day amid what seems to be a less than spectacular life and also an apparently homeless/familyless small child latches on to him on the subway" sort of movie. You know the type. I've seen reviews compare it to Garden State, describing it as "a small film about a group of twentysomethings at life's crossroads with an indie soundtrack." Aside from those few traits I don't think it was especially similar. Seven characters share the lead (sort of); the movie goes into their individual/couple story lines. Relationships, friends, life, troubles, New York. It's a more-romantic-than-not, sorta serious comedy. A fun surprise was discovering that Tony Hale (of Arrested Development fame) was in the film. I liked the movie, it was sweet. The characters, though somewhat familiar in the romcom genre, still brought something new. It had a lot of "movie" lines, though, things people say that just sound like they belong in/came from a movie ("You're a mess!" "What, you don't need a project?" "I'm a mess too, trust me." "So let's...let's clean each other up" and "You're a good man Sam Wexler. Go get yourself loved."). Ted did a good job for a first attempt.
