On Connection

Posted on: Saturday, October 6, 2012

"In order for connection to happen we have to allow ourselves to be seen. Really seen."
In my field of study and work, we talk about taboos. People don't like to talk about taboos, because they are awkward, hard to admit, and difficult to really think about the implications and what the taboos mean about us and human kind. It is hard because we feel shame. It's hard to look at a child and say, "tell me why you molested your cousin." It's hard to walk into a room full of black women and say, "I don't know what it's like to be you, but why don't you tell me." It's hard to ask someone about when they were raped, their PTSD, their religion, their sexual orientation, the color of their skin. Heck, it's hard to ask someone why they cut their hair that way; why they got that weird tattoo; why they wear their clothes like that. You know what's harder? To be the one answering those questions.  And so instead we don't talk about it. But it's still in our heads; we're still wondering. And so we let our assumptions take over. We dig through our experiences and what society tells us we're supposed to think about it, what we see in TV, what we do or don't hear about in the daily news. Our brains need to compartmentalize, generalize, and categorize, and it's easier and necessary for us to assign someone to a folder in our heads and let it be done. We don't even have to open our mouths.

But what does that do? What does not talking do? Not taking the risk of being wrong. To avoid feeling awkward. To save us the embarrassment of saying the wrong thing. Not taking the opportunity to learn and expand the capacity of your mental file folders. What does it do to say I can't talk about race because I'm white, and stop there. I can't relate to a gay man because I'm straight, and so I'm not going to even try. I have nothing to contribute because I am not like you, so let's just not. People say ignorance is bliss but I think it is just ignorance, avoidance, a defense mechanism. We ascribe ignorance to children, a fantasized quality of our younger years of innocence, but I can tell you that a five year old child who wants to kill themselves is not so simply ignorant.

There's no connection to be had from not talking about taboo topics. Yet what people really are all about is connecting. But unfortunately, we stop ourselves from connecting because we are afraid of the potential for disconnect. We're afraid of something being taken away that we never even had to begin with.

We are all limited by our capabilities and enriched by our unique experiences. We shouldn't be afraid to share the latter to expand the former. It's OK to be vulnerable.

Thursday Thoughts (17)

{one} I spend my evenings with these two. And a pile of books/notebooks and laptop.

{two} I am going to try one of each of these with my 10$ Starbucks card I claimed from livingsocial ($5 for a $10 card!). yum. I feel like I must have had a pumpkin spice latte before, but I can't recall (I definitely remember enjoying their holiday drinks last year as that was when I moved down here and Kyle came back from deployment. I worked at Dunkin' through one fall season in Pittsburgh, so I am more familiar with their pumpkin flavored items and enjoy their simple flavor shot coffees, but no DD Cafe down in these parts. Anyway. I'm going to enjoy these.

{three} I made a big batch of some form of southwestern quinoa salad to bring to lunch for the week. It is really tasty and simple to make, and you can really put in whatever you have around.

{four} I kind of want some yellow rain boots. Maybe it's just wishful thinking that it would rain here.
{five} I got my nail polish swap package in the mail from Stephanie! I love them all and I'm excited to try the Essie plumberry for fall! And I already put some of the pink sparkles over the mint polish I had on this week. Thank you Stephanie! :)

{Lastly} I miss this city.

I don't care who you are, how could you not love Michelle Obama. I vote for more inspiring people like her.
"If farmers and blacksmiths could win independence from an empire…if immigrants could leave behind everything they knew for a better life on our shores…if women could be dragged to jail for seeking the vote…if a generation could defeat a depression, and define greatness for all time…if a young preacher could lift us to the mountaintop with his righteous dream…and if proud Americans can be who they are and boldly stand at the altar with who they love…then surely, surely we can give everyone in this country a fair chance at that great American Dream."
Neither side has got it quite right, and nobody is going to provide a quick fix for America, but when I think of who I want to see leading our country, I want people that will be examples for my children, people who will accept my children for whatever and whomever they will grow up to be, people who I can point to and say to my children, "They've got the right idea. They're not perfect, but they've got the right idea."

{one} I love coming home from school/internship to my kitties and husband. They are all pretty cute.

{two} Week one of class + internship is almost over! It's been pretty intense and tiring, but in a good way. No more fire alarms going off.

{three} This chair and room just looks so comfy and cozy. I imagine there is also a fireplace in the room. I want to be there.

{four} Now that I'm commuting to campus, I am glad that I finally got some prescription sunglasses. This way I can both see clearly AND drive into the morning sun!

{five} I really don't have much else. Lots going on but I gotta get back to work!

Thursday Thoughts (15)

Posted on: Thursday, August 16, 2012

{one} brother and sister bird watching.

{two} I am hoping to go to Boston for spring break next year. I've never really done anything interesting on any spring break (well except for getting married on my last one HAH), because I'm usually the dork that uses the time to still do work and not have to deal with the chaos of a short trip. BUT here's the thing. a) I'm already craving being somewhere other than Texas, b) I've been all around the USA but never to New England and I think I would like it and c) I know so many people there now! Two of my bridesmaids Emma and Tracy are in their second and first years of grad school up there, our friend Allie is from there, AND my sister, who has been working at Georgetown University Qatar campus for the last two years, will be returning to the states and moving up there in September for a manager position at Georgetown Cupcake (super cool. She worked at the very first DC shop while in undergrad). There's really no reason for me not to go, except figuring out if Kyle would be able to come also. Army things are likely happening next year, and in Army fashion we might not know too far in advance. But I've looked into plane tickets already, and they're just so inexpensive right now.

{three} Kyle and I have been watching the Long Way Down on youtube. Ewan McGregor and his buddy Charley ride motorcycles from the tip top of the UK to the very bottom of South Africa, with a small team. It's pretty cool, even if you're not that into motorcycles (me). We are currently at the part where they are in Kenya, I think a little over half way of the distance. It makes me want to adopt all the little children.

{four} I'm not sure when the wedding photos will be ready. Sometimes I forget that happened. I guess I'm no longer in such a rush to get them; I think it helps that we saw a preview a while ago. I am looking forward to sharing more about the day and the details here on the blog, though!

{five} My week-long intro course has ended (except not really because we still have stuff due, including a group presentation, and two more class sessions on the next two Fridays), so I have my last long weekend off before school really starts on Monday! I had to get a drug screen for my internship, and other than that I should be ready to go! Binders and textbooks and post-its, oh my! I will not be saying very much, if anything about my internship on the blog/online. I will be at a hospital and residential treatment center working with at-risk patients, so for confidentiality as well as simple professional reasons, I won't discuss even how it is going. But I am optimistic and really looking forward to the experience! I will probably have a blog post soon about my Baylor first impressions, and general excitement over my profession of choice. :)

{six} Somehow no pictures were taken (not even of the food!), but I met up with Sar for lunch the other day in Waco! She was terribly sweet and funny and listened to my crazy family drama.

{seven} Any nail polish and The Office fans? You may get a kick out of this as I did! I would definitely add "that's what she said" to my polish collection.
{eight} Ever really loved a book and didn't really know why? I randomly picked this up from a bookshelf in my 11th grade classroom and read it, and it is my favorite book. I have reread it since, but I'm not sure I could tell you why it quickly became my favorite. It must have really appealed to something in my 11th grade self.

{nine} I'm excited for fall TV to return. Because of shows like Happy Endings.

{ten} I like this for a few reasons.

Thursday Thoughts (14)

{one} Stray kitty has been spotted around more. She is really friendly. She followed me right to the front door and sat there waiting to come in. Huxley discovered her, and tried to get out to hang with this new friend. It was pretty cute.

{two} Kyle's birthday is Sunday! Hooray!

{three} Kyle and I tried this new (ish) place Smash Burger for lunch. It seems like a nice place and we both enjoyed the food. They put way too much ketchup and mustard on mine and it kind of fell apart and was a big mess, but it tasted good!

{four} First day of class went well. I somehow escaped never having to do an annotated bibliography in undergrad, but I have one due Tuesday. It doesn't look that bad, but I remember everyone hating doing them. Anyway, I'm still super excited for everything, so that's good.

{five} I think my re-organizing and redecorating of my office area is pretty much complete. Here's a preview. I love my new gold skull.

{six}I'm so excited for new Arrested Development episodes. So excited.

Thursday Thoughts (13)

{one} Kitty picture, featuring Kyle. I think Darwin's life goal is to somehow walk on the ceiling. I don't know what she is thinking, but she tries hard to get up there. And we sometimes encourage it.

{two} I  got new glasses! With my last pair, the nose bridge pads are reflected in the lens, so it is like there is always a little smudge I can't clean away, which is super annoying. I thought this time around I'd get some larger glasses, the better to fit my large head (I figured?). I really like them!

{three}
I had to order this shirt, because it was on sale and has penguins on it (my hockey team!). Also- a little back-to-school shopping; this is grad school appropriate, right?

Maybe I will make my mark in the world of Baylor social work by being known as the lady who wears animals on her shirts, as I've already got a bird shirt and a cat shirt. Hopefully I will also be known for other things, but you've got to start somewhere! Animals on my shirts is not a bad place to start.

{four} My Summertime Swap package from Wendy arrived! It was packaged so nicely and contained such great summery stuff! I'm wearing the tank and lip balm right now :) Thanks Wendy, and thanks to Linny for hosting!

{five} Kyle and I had a little lunch date at a Mexican restaurant today. It was really tasty. More on that tomorrow!

{six} I start school sort of next week! We have two orientation days, and then a week long intro to the profession course, and then classes and internship start on the 20th! I'm excited, and nervous. This is my new big adventure for the next two years. Baylor, me and my new large glasses will be seeing you soon. I hope you like me even though I'm not Christian and am weirded out by all this Christian themed assigned reading. I'm sure we will have some interesting conversations.

{seven} I'd say I want it to be fall, but I don't know if there is much of a fall down here to look forward to. I just want it to be cold. And more northestern USA-like. I miss Pittsburgh weather, rainy and ugly as it often was. It is more of the school setting I like, if any of this makes sense.

{eight} So, Chick Fil-A. I get that this is America and you can think what you want and express it, but if you tie your controversial views to that of your company, shit is going to go down. Also if your views go against human rights in an effort to suppress the happiness of others (which seems like an entirely stupid and purposeless endeavor to me), I'm not going to like you, regardless of if you sell chicken sandwiches or cow manure. And I know it is a tricky situation when states begin banning businesses with less than ideal views, but I'd rather err on the side of equality than that of oppression. That is all.

{nine} Last chance to enter the Olympic giveaway! I'll pick and announce the winner tomorrow morning!

Thursday Thoughts (12)

{1} Kitty pictures. They took turns at this window yesterday.

{2} I finally get my husband back! Tonight is his last night shift (for this week) after a marathon of night shifts, so he'll come home after PT and probably sleep until dinner time, and then we should have the whole weekend together.

{3} I got my kindle fire! Well this is a birthday gift from my family; I opened it early because I thought in the box were actual books I ordered for school, but then there was the kindle and I thought why stop now (/I was sad and home alone)! The free books seem to be either classics or trashy romance novels, so I downloaded some of the classics and only bought one book so far (Stiff by Mary Roach, about cadavers! my type of book, considering I've worked with cadavers myself). I also downloaded the Bible, and spent the evening reading between the two. The book about dead bodies makes a whoooole lot more sense to me, but I find if I approach the Bible like I approach ancient Greek mythology (which I love), it makes the story more bearable and I am less critical. But still critical, because what in the world? I like that on the Kindle Fire I can highlight parts of the book and write notes just like I would do on paper, so I can ask questions later. Anyway, I wasn't sure for a long time if I wanted a Kindle, but I love it and I think it will be great for grad school (if not for textbook use, than simply to have quick, easy and light access to lots of books should I need/want them).
also I accidentally borrowed Harry Potter. but it's Harry Potter, so that's OK with me.

{4} I recently discovered these wife swap shows. They are ridiculous.

{5} I'm all ready for my cheesecake baking adventure tomorrow! I'd never heard of a springform pan, but I got one of those too.

{6} My nails are currently Christmas colors. I wasn't
going for the seasonally misguided festive look, but I wanted green toes and then wanted red nails, so it happened.

Ten on Tuesday

Posted on: Tuesday, July 17, 2012

1. I feel so bad for my husband. He goes to work at 2pm, comes home around 8:30 the next morning after the night guard shift and PT, sleeps from 9am to 1pm, then gets up and does it again, for a week straight. It's no fun. I'm hoping he'll have the weekend off, or at least a day. Four hours of sleep tops is not good for the Army. From the sounds of it they don't have much to do either, and he'll report to me how many crickets he killed on guard (600 lats night). I wish they were at least using the time to train our soldiers so they are ready for deployments. But let's not get me started on all the things wrong with the US military. I plan on making Kyle a cheesecake at the end of the week (never made one before).

2. Still in love with my planner. It took me not as long as I expected to get over my nervousness about actually writing in it and using it, haha.
yes I need my planner with me at all times thank you

3. I'm getting ready for school! Doing some supply shopping, figuring out student loans for the first time, more Baylor paperwork, clearing the clutter from my desk, buying books. I'm excited but also nervous. I'm not quite sure what to expect.

4. Turning 24 on Sunday. Is 24 noteworthy for any reason?

5. I thought Dexter season 6 was really great. It got back to the Dexter of early seasons that I love so much, and the story was great and captivating throughout. I'm looking forward to 7 and 8 and seeing how they end the show.

6. I could use a good girls night, but all my girls are states and states away.

7. My German friend posted this photo from the wedding, of the table toasting with their cake pops! Love it! My mom's friend made the most amazing cake pops and we put one for everyone at each table; hopefully there will be a detailed photo to come!

8. My tattoo is all peeled and still there!

9. What a perfect and pretty summer treat! raspberry sorbet in lemon bowls

10. This is still happening soon! :)

15 Day Challenge // July 1

Posted on: Sunday, July 1, 2012

Friends are visiting and we spent the day in Austin; sorry for the late post!

List 15 fun facts about yourself.

1. I got a tattoo today! More on that tomorrow. :)

2. The first CD I owned was Alanis Morissette "Jagged Little Pill." I got it for Christmas with my first CD player. The first concert I went to was also Alanis Morissette. Looking back, I have no clue how I as an eight year old had any connection to her music, but I loved it.

3. I had surgery on my left wrist senior year of high school (2006). This after years of physical therapy, a month in a cast, a handful of different braces, a shot, and several doctors. I think it is mostly OK now.

4. If I eat something that makes me sick or I am for some reason sick after, I won't eat that thing for a long time. This happened with pizza and chocolate when I was in elementary school. I was that weird kid that brought a lunchable to class on pizza party day.

5. When my family was moving from Canada to California, I was 3. Our upstairs apartment neighbors were tossing down candy or something to us, we took a limo to the airport, and I threw up in the limo. Classic Sarah (I threw up for the first six months of my life).

6. Celebrities I've met: Al from Home Improvement, Maroon 5, Jason Mraz and Toca, BJ Novak. I feel like I am forgetting someone else. Also I grew up in CA in the town that MC Hammer did, and his daughter was on my sister's softball team. He wore all black and sunglasses.

7. We almost adopted a boxer/lab puppy July 2010, but half an hour before the foster family was supposed to bring her over, they called and said they were keeping her.

8. I am not a picky eater, but I generally do not like zucchini that much.

9. I hated the feel of lotion until college, and now I use it every day.

10. The book "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" is part of the reason I switched from being a business/international studies major to an anthropology/psychology major. More on that on Day 7 I suppose!

11. In July 2010 I slipped getting into the shower and hit my left shin on the tub. I still have a lump and bruise there.

12. I mentioned this in one of my very first blog posts, but we are planning on naming our first baby boy Apollo. :)

13. I don't get how people drink sweet tea as is. Way too sweet!

14. I have Osgood-Schlatter Disease. Didn't grow out of it, unfortunately.

15. I think baseball and golf are the worst.
