Sunday Night Wine Theory

Posted on: Wednesday, October 30, 2013

^^I got six bottles of wine in the mail today, much to my surprise. I'm set for all the Sundays.^^

I would like to propose a theory.  It is a simple theory. Sunday night television is the best night of television for drinking wine. Pinot noir, specifically, lately, but any wine will do.

Dexter (RIP)
Breaking Bad (RIP)
The Walking Dead

Bloody. Gritty. Dark.

Wine. Sunday. Do it. It's a great way to kick of the week.

PS- I realize two of these shows are now over, so, that sucks.

Off to Washington

Posted on: Friday, May 17, 2013

I'm flying out this morning, to visit friends in Baltimore for a quick 24 hours, and then it's on to DC with the rest of the group! I'm not sure how frequently I will be posting during the trip, but I imagine you will be hearing from me. You can follow along on instagram in the meantime if you like, @mrssmcp.  :)

PS- How'd you like that Office finale? I thought it was perfect (minus baby abandonment). Absolutely stunning.

What The Office Means to Me

Posted on: Thursday, May 16, 2013

Today the final episode of The Office will air. I have been saying for weeks, maybe months, probably since this was announced to be the final season, to my husband, "I'm going to cry. A lot." Regardless of what happens in the episode, if I'm left happy or sad (likely both, the show has a talent for doing that), there will be tears.

While I have not been a part of the show, the show has become a part of my life. I started watching it during my freshman year of undergrad, and fell in love fast. I started collecting the seasons for Christmas gifts, and I have watched them all many times. My senior year I lived alone and didn't have cable, so I watched a lot of The Office repeats; often I would just put it on and let it play while I was doing other things. And then when Kyle for basic training and began our adventure in the Army, I started watching it even more, most evenings. It was a comfort to me when I couldn't chat with Kyle as I usually would. Three years later, and on the verge of our second deployment, it is still my comfort show. It is reliably the one thing that will make me feel...better. The Office somehow means that it will be OK, that I will be OK. "It's more than a show, it is." Thursday evenings certainly won't be the same. Thank you for The Office.

Dexter Music

Posted on: Thursday, September 22, 2011

I don't have much time or energy for a post today, but I thought I'd quickly share this cool Dexter music video (Thanks Melaura!). Because, well I love Dexter, and the show returns October 2, and I don't get Showtime so I can't watch it on the TV, and Kyle has been watching the series over in Iraq, and the Dexter intro song is my ringtone.

And the original intro from the show...(it makes Kyle hungry for breakfast)

Have a nice Thursday! I have med training 8-12, then work 1-8ish. Much to do.

Mad Men

Posted on: Sunday, August 21, 2011

After work today I did laundry and watched a few episodes of Mad Men for the first time (with some interruptions due to the storm). So...I can't tell if it's a good show or not, mostly because it initially made me quite upset. Probably because it is filled with things I do not like, namely: men cheating on wives (I also hate wives cheating on husbands), women who sleep with married men, and oh my gosh all the smoking around children (which I also saw a lot of down at Fort Hood. poison yourself but not your itty bitty children). The things the characters say made me cringe. Also January Jones talks like that every time I've seen her, as a character or as herself, so she bugs me a bit. I think I'm learning that my issue may be with the 60s, if that's what it was like, not the show. Though I'm discovering I love a nice dose of vintage, so it's fun to see the clothes and houses and everything! I will probably, maybe keep watching...I am guilty of quickly becoming addicted to shows, whether I particularly like them or not (why I try to avoid watching new ones).

I hope everyone had a nice weekend! I spent mine working, house sitting, cleaning up a bit, eating mango, missing Kyle terribly, and avoiding downtown at all costs (it was Penn State move-in weekend. yikes).

Dexter

Posted on: Monday, May 2, 2011

I love the show Dexter. Love love love. Credit for introducing the show to me goes to my brother who bugged us for months to watch it. I didn't know much about it and often confused the show for Chuck (both guys names, and that's all I knew about them), but one day I decided to start watching it. I think I watched the whole first season in two days (there wasn't much going on that weekend anyway). Season One first impressions: incredible. So good! I typically go for NBC comedy shows (with the exception of Bones which I only discovered a year ago), not Showtime emotionally stunted man hunts criminals set free my the failings of the justice system and hacks them into pieces shows (based on a book). The character Dexter is wonderful; he is introduced to us and portrays himself as devoid of feeling human emotions, though he is well aware of what they are, and what others expect him to be feeling. He puts on a smile when he should, can fake enthusiasm and concern with just a little thought. He's got a girlfriend (plus kids) too, to help his facade. He is an unassuming actor working (blood spatter) forensics at a Miami police precinct by day, and hunter of evildoers by night. He has a hunger for it, not an innate desire to clean up the world of the filth that slip through the cracks; they are more a convenient and justifiable outlet as set down in a sort of code by his adoptive father Harry (the only one aware of his hobby). Dexter is a vigilante doing what those tasked with our protection cannot. Right or wrong, he does it, and it's awesome. He narrates the show, so we hear his thoughts behind his outward projections to those around him.

Each season of twelve episodes focuses on one main case that Dexter and his police buddies are working on: the Ice Truck Killer, Bay Harbor Butcher, Trinity, etc. Dexter is often a step ahead of the police, and doesn't often share the information he has with them so that he can savor taking down the bad guy for himself (and he often gets quite personally involved early on in the season). He has his projects on the side, though when you're going around making people disappear and you work in a police station, there is bound to be some overlap and more than a few close calls. While I personally find his sister Deb quite irritating, the cast of characters around him also develop nicely, as suspicion arises and Dexter does his best to quell them. There are currently five seasons out, with the sixth to start up in the fall. Some seasons are better than others (all are better than the fifth); the first and fourth have to be my favorites.

Dexter is smart, well cast, and very addictive. You should probably watch it.
